  • Evaluation board user manual including schematics and tutorials on how to use the tools

Features

  • Built-in debug monitor supports code download, memory and register editing, stepping and breakpoints.
  • RS-232 serial ports (MCU's SCI channels; one is required by the debug monitor) LEDs for power indication and user application.
  • Connectors for a user interface to MCU I/O ports.

Product Information

Renesas's Evaluation and Development Kits (EDKs) allow evaluation of Renesas controllers and processors, providing an introduction to the associated toolchain and a simple low-cost way to begin software and hardware development.

The EDKs interface to a PC running Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP. Renesas's build environment, HEW, is available with the EDK or downloadable from the Web. This software supports project management, source code generation and editing, and toolchain setup and control. Hitachi's debuggers provide comprehensive C language source level debug.

EDK Tutorials

Tutorials are included within the manual to enable users to quickly get up and running with the supplied tools and easily begin to evaluate the suitability of the Renesas device for the purpose at hand.  The tutorials are divided into two or three sections:

  • Basic tutorials
  • Embedded code tutorials
  • FLASH programming tutorials

The Basic tutorials cover all aspects of creating, building and running simple applications within the monitor environment. Step-by-step instructions detail how to perform each task, making progress straightforward.  The embedded code tutorials clearly demonstrate how to create 'real code' which makes use of the on-board peripherals of the device.

The creation of startup code is covered allowing the correct initialization of the system in an environment where the code is not downloaded before execution.  Examples using the on-chip peripherals to generate interrupts demonstrate how to create interrupt service routines in C, and how to create the vector table.  For FLASH programming an additional tutorial section is included, which explains the FLASH operation, and demonstrates how to use the tools provided to program the on-chip FLASH of that device.
