Usage Control

The security design described here is similar to the one described in the Anti-Cloning of a Peripheral use case. However, it adds several more features:

  • The PKI security scheme is used because the host also contains secure information (i.e., in the form of a certificate for the country code)
  • It allows a company to enforce a usage policy (or limit) on a system. For example, a peripheral device is allowed may have an ‘expiry’ date, or a maximum number of authentication cycles (i.e. for medical safety reasons).

This feature opens new business models with repeat sales of ‘disposable’ devices than cannot be misused, overused or counterfeited.
