Board ID Solution Overview
The Renesas Board ID solutions provide a very secure identity for the motherboard or circuit board of a system, peripheral or device. Among the many uses of these solutions, one is the replacement of the EEPROM traditionally used to store the serial number used for device identification. The EEPROM implementation, while simple, provides only limited protection against changing or copying the identity data. Even secure-EEPROM products, which provide an added level of security via write-once, secure-write, and secure-read functions, are limited in their functionality. Also, they use encryption technologies (symmetrical key) that leave the system vulnerable.
By contrast, Renesas BID solutions implement the proven protection techniques developed and proven in the security chips we have long manufactured for credit cards, smart cards, telecom identity modules and government ID cards. They overcome the weaknesses of EEPROM-based security designs because they offer many important features:
- Proven, tamperproof smart card technology
- Authentication of identity
- Secure read/write of data
- Asymmetrical key encryption option
- Resistance to a wide range of physical, electrical, and timing attacks
- Can connect to any standard MCU
Board ID Firmware
The BID Firmware system is thoroughly tested and proven code that accelerates the development of user applications for the Renesas BID series of devices. The BID operating system provides an API for various cryptographic, math and system-resource functions in a secure environment. Its core utilizes the hardware security features of the device firewall management unit (FMU), allowing the OS to be separated from the user applications.
Board ID Chip Features Implement Robust Security
The security chip is based on Renesas Technology’s extensive experience building devices for smart cards. Its features have been further developed and refined to meet the needs of M2M authentication applications in which valuable physical or intellectual property might be threatened by theft, misuse or any other form of malfeasance. The chip is easy to apply and is priced to be a cost-effective product enhancement. It ensures a high level of protection against unauthorized application or misappropriation.
