RL78 is Renesas Electronics' next-generation microcontroller family combining advanced features from both the 78K and R8C families to deliver low power consumption and high performance.
RL78 is based upon a 16 bit CISC architecture with analogue rich functionality. The platform lineup will include general purpose, LCD and ASSPs including lighting and automotive microcontrollers.
RL78 is designed specifically for ultra low power applications enabling customers to build compact and energy-efficient systems at lower cost.
Features (Advantages) of the Family
Roadmap
Lineup:
RL78/D1x
Renesas is introducing the RL78/D1x as an optimized solution for the BRICs and low-end instrument cluster markets.
The RL78/D1x is the successor of 78K0/Dx2 or UPD78082x microcontrollers and suited for car instrument cluster, built-in car instrument cluster dedicated features such as Sound Generator, Stepper Motor Controller/Driver and LCD Segment Controller/Driver etc.
RL78/F1x
The RL78/F1x sophisticated MCU family is the successor of the both well known 78K0R/Fx3 and R8C/5x that realize low power consumption and high performance for a broad range of automotive applications.
The new RL78/F12 group is equipped with a high-precision on-chip oscillator that provides a 32 MHz clock source for the CPU (24MHz for 125°C products) and the built-in peripherals. The innovative "Snooze" mode achieves ultra-low power by allowing ADC operation and serial communication, while the CPU is turned off.
In addition features such as a low voltage detection circuit, a watchdog timer, a reset circuit and a data flash with background operation function that help to lower the total cost of building a system and contribute to more compact size and lower power consumption.
Further more abundant functions supporting functional safety, such as an A/D converter testing function and RAM guard are also on-chip.
With 20 to 64-pin packages, combined with memory sized from 8 to 64kB flash and the frame oriented LIN (Local Interconnect Network) interface the RL78/F12 products are suitable for a wide range of cost-effective automotive ECUs like switches, remote keyless entry, wiper, HVAC, lighting modules and engine sub controllers.
RL78/G1x
The RL78/G1x (general purpose group) is a true low power MCU series within the RL78 family.

RL78/I1x
The RL78/I1x is the successor of the 78K0/Ix2 and suited for lighting control and power control applications.
RL78/L1x
The RL78/L1x microcontroller family is a peripheral rich family of true low power microcontrollers integrating smart LCD controller/driver, suitable for industrial and consumer LCD display applications. RL78/L1x offer unique display driver functionality to reduce system power consumption.
